Free Childcare for Mothers beating their Gambling Addiction

15.12.2009

Women have equalled men in their successes, in the work place and in society as a whole. So it stands to reason that some women have also adopted some of the habits we once thought were more male-oriented, like gambling.

It has recently been publicised that mothers who are coping with an addiction to online games such as bingo and other types of gambling are now in a position to receive free childcare whilst they work towards beating their gambling addiction.

The National Problem Gambling Clinic based in Soho, London, and funded as part of the NHS will soon be offering free childcare to itís patients in a bid to make it easier for mothers to overcome their problem.

The motivation for the move comes from the sheer number of women out there believed to be suffering in silence, and the knock-on effect this is having on their children.

It is believed that there are between 250,000 - 600,000 problem gamblers in the UK of which women are a significant part, approximately 1 in 4 gamblers are women. The number of women with gambling addiction in the UK has doubled in the recent years and this is a statistic that looks set to continue in its ascent.

Dr Bowden-Jones, head of the Soho based clinic said that there are some women who can play online in excess of 10 hrs a day. It seems when the children are out at school and their husbands are out at work women are getting their online gambling fix.

There is also the fear that the knock on effect of an online gambling addiction - which is relatively easy to disguise Ė has a significant effect on the children who may not be receiving the nurturing, emotional support that is born out of interaction at home. The clinic believes that offering free childcare will enable women to seek treatment while knowing their children are being cared for.

Dr. Bowden-Jones stated that women problem gamblers suffer different emotional issues from men problem gamblers and therefore they must be addressed and treated accordingly. In many cases, women gamblers may be suffering from depression and finding solace in the short-tern high of the game.

There are approximately 2,000 online gambling websites, and despite the recession, this looks set to grow. It goes without saying that the top brands out there take a very serious stance on gambling addiction and the majority of sites out there support and promote a positive attitude towards gambling.

Simon Collins, Director of online gaming operator Cashcade, confirmed they have an 80% female audience across itís portfolio of brands including Foxy Bingo, Cheeky Bingo and Think Bingo and have always focused significant energies in preventing online gambling addiction. He confirmed that the sites have daily, weekly and monthly limits put in place in order to rule out huge spending. This is realised in the self assessment tools that many sites make available.
Indeed, all online gaming websites are required to comply with industry bodies such as GamCare and it is the good sites that will provide their players with the necessary safeguards in order to prevent the beginnings of what can turn out to be a serious problem
